“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
Whether you’re a Christian or not, these words speak to our humanity, our imperfection. They give me peace and comfort when I screw up (which is often) and they remind me of grace and forgiveness when others screw up (which is often). Not one of us is perfect. Not one of us has it all figured out.
These words allow me to find love for others even when they don’t love me. These words remind me that we’re all just trying to do the best that we can in this life with the tools that we have. They make me want to share the tools that I have with others and be open to others sharing their tools with me. For we are all on different points of the journey and can learn from others’ wisdom.
Will I screw up again? It is certain. Will I try not to? Of course. Will I try to improve and learn from the lessons of the past? Of course! But imperfection and failure is a guarantee along the way just by our nature. It doesn’t mean we’ll fail every time – the goal is to fail less along the way. It doesn’t mean we give up trying. It just means we seek out and practice forgiveness for ourselves and others along the way and we find opportunities to grow and change.
Will I still suffer consequences of my failures? Yup. And that part sucks. But the suckiness encourages me to improve and learn from my failures so I don’t suffer that consequence again.
So once again, I act, a result takes place. If it’s one of the failure moments, then it won’t feel great, but it also means I can choose to take the high road, forgive myself, and do better next time.
We all need a little (a lot) grace and forgiveness.
If you need some help figuring out how to change your actions to get different results, give me a call. I'd love to share what I've learned.
