In my last post I shared a goal and struggles that I was/am personally coaching myself through so I thought I should do a followup.
I had just received some not-so-stellar test results from my doctor which confirmed what I already knew. I kept finding myself returning to a mental self-flagellation state of mind and beating myself up over not meeting my goals. While I knew that was not a helpful place to be in, my mind kept jumping back to that old rut that was leading me nowhere.
I shared the steps I was actively taking to continue to pull myself out of that rut and today I want to share that a couple days later that old wagon wheel of a brain of mine finally jumped out of that deep rut it was stuck in. And suddenly I lost those three pounds I'd gained. I started feeling like my old self again and capable of moving forward.
Why share this?
Because I want you all to know that life isn't all sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes we go through hard times and we feel like crap. But that doesn't mean that our goals are too lofty or that we aren't good enough to achieve them. It just means we've hit an obstacle and need to work through it to keep moving forward. The obstacles can be anything. Maybe you need more money to invest in the next phase of your business growth. Maybe you need to work through some old thought patterns that are holding you back. Maybe you're just getting older and the things you once did don't work for you now so you need to make adjustments. Any and all of these and more are possible obstacles. Take the time to work through them so you can continue toward achieving the goal you desire.
I also want you to recognize that the time you spend working on those obstacles is STILL a part of moving forward. Your feet may not be moving as fast as you want - or maybe even not at all - but you are still processing the information you need to continue toward that goal or that future you desire. That's part of your forward progress.
Don't expect life to be positive 100% of the time. If you are working on achieving a goal that you've never accomplished before, you can bet things are going to get really uncomfortable and a lot of negative thoughts are going to surface. That's part of growth. Just know that you can handle discomfort and be ready to jot down those negative thoughts that pop up so you can identify them and figure out where they're coming from.
Finally, don't forget to be compassionate to yourself on your journey. Your brain has been doing a great job of forming thought-automations for you so that you don't have to think all the time about every little thing. In my last post, my brain had just returned to its default programming suddenly and I had to clear it out and reinstall the more up-to-date program I want it to run on - the one with more self-compassion, understanding and curiosity about the situation instead of blame.
Breaking out of ruts is hard work and everyone has a rut to deal with in their life - coaches are no exception. But with time and disciplined efforts it is possible to reprogram your brain to think in new ways, to make new ruts that are more in line with the life you want to have.
